"I visited Dali during the summer, and I felt quite conflicted. It's a relatively new tourist city (due to its geographical location, it doesn’t have much cultural depth). Many hotels have been developed because of its beautiful scenery, but many old places have also been preserved, creating a unique atmosphere. It’s not a particularly pleasant feeling for me as a tourist and an outsider. While the local people (both ethnic minorities and Han locals) still face limited economic development and living conditions, just a few hundred meters away are hotels charging over two thousand RMB per night.
